Have a maternity session coming up and not sure what to do? Let me give you some tips on how to prep for a maternity session. I’m going to use some of my own personal experience from when I prepped for my maternity sesh!
Ladies, I can’t stress this enough. This was a lesson I learned the hard way. There was a dress online that had intended on getting and wearing for my maternity session, BUT, I waited too long to order it online. It ended up coming in the week of my session. When it showed up, it was the WRONG DRESS, the wrong color, didn’t fit right AND it was see-through. It was a nightmare. Definitely one of those memes that show the expectation vs. what was delivered.
So, do NOT do what I did and wait too long. I ended up wearing the dress because it was too late for any other options. However, I did not feel comfortable in it and I had to do a ton of altering it just to wear it out of the house. You can’t tell in the photos, but there are many hidden safety pins and hidden clothing underneath (including white pants)!
If you’re looking for maternity dresses, here are some vendors that I reccomend:
What kind of vibe do you want? I recommend a vibe that is timeless and fits you. These images will be classic images to look back on. Do you prefer indoors? Outdoors? A field at sunset? A beach at sunrise?
For mine, I simply ended up getting them done at a botanical garden – the same one that I got married at. It was fun to go back there and recreate some of out wedding photos, however this time with a baby bump.
Of course your photographer is going to have a lineup for poses for you, mixed in with some candids. However, it’s always good to also have an idea in the back of your mind with some poses that you personally like. What do you want to see on your walls in your home? For me, I personally knew I wanted a close-up shot of our hands on my tummy. I also wanted some full body shots of us together with his hand on my tummy.
I realized too later that I didn’t bring with me one of the props I wanted to bring – an ultrasound photo of our baby! That’s something you can consider bringing with you. Another prop that I’ve seen people use during a session is a letter board. That way you can announce when you’re due! Also as a side note, if you don’t have one, I do. So if you’d like one for your maternity session just ask and Ill bring it along for you to use!
Although there are more things you can consider for your maternity session, I hope this at least gives you a start!
